TEXAS PRISON LABOR UNION:
Warning to All Activists
Mr. Dwight Rawlinson received a copy of a communication written by Kay Thigpin, Legal Asst. III Office of General Counsel, TDCJ-ID.
In this communication Ms.Thigpin asserts two incredible points in support in her support of her refusal to honor Mr. Rawlinsons Opened Records Request. Below is an excerpt of Ms. Thigpins letter; "However, had we received Mr. Rawlinsons request, we would not have responded because we believe he is an agent for several inmates, including inmate Binch. On his request to Major Foley he sent a copy of his letter to inmate Binch, who is in Administrative Segregation. I am sending you a copy of a letter Mr. Rawlinson sent to the Ombudsman office, and it shows the Founder as Rick L. Long.
Ricky L. Long is also an inmate. Enclosed is a copy of just some of the information I retrieved from the Internet on the Texas Prison Labor Union. Without doubt, this Organization is for inmates and run by inmates."
Signed Kay Thigpin,
Ms. Thigpin comes to some disturbing and incredible conclusions. First and most disturbing is the conclusion drawn that since Mr. Rawlinson assists prisoners in resolving Human Rights Abuses that he (and others who assist prisoners) are agents for the prisoners whom they assist, therefore by some incredible formula Thigpin concludes that Mr. Rawlinson, a free citizen of the State of Texas is disenfranchised, thus loses his rights as a citizen. Second, Thigpin concludes that since I founded the TPLU, I run the organization. This is incredible in that I have no access to either a phone or computers or the madrid of other instruments needed to run an organization. Thigpin is obviously misinformed about Texas prisoners and what is and is not allowed inside and what prisoners are allowed access to.
I am also allowed access to posting on other sites so therefore, using Thigpins reasoning I also run those organizations and likewise, any site which posts for prisoners is run by prisoners. This is absurd and should enrage every activist and Human Rights Organization in the country. If this outrageous assertion is allowed to stand as precedent it will be utilized against all activists in Texas and across the nation. This is clearly fruit of a poisonous tree and its seed the seed of desecration of Civil Liberties and Human Rights.
If you have never taken affirmative action in the form of letter writing and protest, now is the time and this is the issue upon which to take an affirmative stance. I urge you on the strongest possible terms to write letters of protest to those listed below, protesting this absurd and incredible position that the Office of General Counsel has taken in regard to defending Human and Civil Rights.
In Struggle and Solidarity,
Write to:
